The Renovation work begins...

Linking Heritage and Community - Our Story

The community of Stixwould has had a long and determined journey to restore its Village Hall, formerly the village school.

A project that began in the1980s, has culminated in major restoration work to the roof, floors and drains and provided a new interior to the Grade 2 listed building. Our grateful thanks goes to the National Lottery Heritage Fund and all the players who have made this possible, without their support, this precious asset and its rich heritage would have been lost.

Over the decades, numerous residents and many others contributed through fundraising events, volunteer work, and steadfast support to keep the hall open. Despite its deteriorating condition, it has remained a hub for community events such as craft classes, coffee mornings, quizzes and the renowned Harvest and Burns Suppers as well as acting as the polling station for the area. Recent progress was propelled by the committee’s tireless work, overcoming challenges such as the ownership of the building and land, and the costly protracted process of setting up a charity and securing a 35 year lease from the Lincoln Diocesan Trust.

This lease unlocked further funding, including smaller grants and ultimately the amazing National Lottery Heritage Fund award of £240,460 which means it is now a warm welcoming space with full disabled access to the main hall, toilet facilities, kitchen and community garden.

In addition, thanks to the heritage component of the award, the village is now proud to honour Stixwould resident and scholar, Major Jim Almonds, MM and Bar, Croix de Guerre, a founder member of the SAS in 1942. Some of his wartime deeds are featured in the BBCTV series SAS Rogue Heroes played by actor Corin Silva who has sent a message of support for our work.

Residents have created an exhibition that details Almonds’s early life in the village as well as some of his exploits during a long and incredible career. Twenty-eight  members of his family attended the official reopening and plaque unveiling in May 2025, marking a proud new chapter for Stixwould Village Hall where the exhibition will be regularly displayed.
